Congress wins Karnataka assembly elections, claims mandate for change
The Congress party has emerged victorious in the Karnataka assembly elections held on May 10, 2023, defeating the incumbent BJP government led by Basavaraj Bommai. The Congress has won 120 seats out of 224, securing a comfortable majority and ending the BJP’s five-year rule in the state. The BJP has managed to win only 90 seats, while the JD(S) has been reduced to 12 seats. The remaining two seats have gone to independent candidates.
Mr Shivakumar,
said that the victory was the best birthday gift given to him by the people of
Karnataka and thanked them for their trust and support. He also credited former
chief minister Siddaramaiah and Congress leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge
for their guidance and contribution to the party’s campaign.
The
Congress has claimed that the people of Karnataka have voted for a change and
rejected the BJP’s divisive and communal agenda. The party has promised to work
for the welfare and development of all sections of society, especially the
backward classes, minorities and farmers. The party has also vowed to eradicate
corruption, improve governance and restore law and order in the state.
The
BJP, on the other hand, has conceded defeat and accepted the verdict of the
people. Chief minister Bommai said that he respects the mandate of the voters
and congratulated Shivakumar for his victory. He also thanked Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, BJP president J P Nadda and other central leaders for their
support and guidance. He said that he will submit his resignation to the
governor and facilitate a smooth transfer of power.
The BJP
has attributed its loss to various factors, including anti-incumbency, caste
equations, internal dissensions and local issues. The party has also faced
criticism for its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, its decision to scrap
reservation for backward Muslims and its failure to implement its promises such
as Uniform Civil Code and National Register of Citizens.
The
JD(S), which was once a kingmaker in Karnataka politics, has suffered a major
setback in this election. The party has lost its support base among the
Vokkaligas and other communities to both Congress and BJP. The party’s leader H
D Kumaraswamy said that he accepts the verdict of the people and congratulated
Shivakumar for his victory. He also said that he will continue to work for the
people of Karnataka as a constructive opposition.
The election results have
also thrown up some interesting trends and surprises. The voter turnout was
recorded at 73.19 per cent, the highest since 1957. The women
voters outnumbered men by over 2 lakh. Some
prominent candidates who won include Shivakumar from Kanakapura, Siddaramaiah
from Badami, Bommai from Shiggaon and Kumaraswamy from Channapatna. Some notable
candidates who lost include former deputy chief minister C N Ashwath Narayan
from Malleshwaram, former home minister Basavaraj Bommai from Hubli-Dharwad
Central and former speaker K R Ramesh Kumar from Srinivaspur.
The Congress is yet to
announce its chief ministerial candidate, as it has left the decision to its
high command. However, speculation is rife that Shivakumar is the frontrunner
for the post, given his role in leading the party to victory. Other contenders include
Siddaramaiah, Kharge and K C Venugopal. The Congress legislative party
(CLP) is expected to meet soon to elect its leader unanimously.
The
Karnataka election results have significant implications for national politics
as well. The Congress has gained momentum ahead of the crucial Uttar Pradesh
elections next year and has shown that it can challenge the BJP in its
stronghold states. The BJP has suffered a setback in its bid to expand its
footprint in southern India and has lost one of state where it was in ruling.
